GERD and its symptoms, do you have it

Acid reflux can also be called gastro esophageal reflux or more commonly known as GERD is a disease that affects children, adults and even infants but has a high susceptibility to women who are pregnant, those who are smokers, and those people who sleeps right after eating without even resting for a bit.Acid reflux occurs with the following symptoms: difficulty in breathing, chest congestion, mild to severe heartburn or hoarseness are some serious signs. These classical signs and symptoms can be felt by a patient suffering from GERD right after ingestion of a fatty diet, intake of alcohol, when bending over, and when smoking.

The primary cause of acid reflux is a weak or relaxed esophageal sphincter. Of course in certain cases, the gastric acid produced by stomach becomes the main reason.Inflammation is caused in some cases when the gastric acids supplied is not adequate.

hiatus hernia, zollinger-elison syndrome, hypercalcemia, scleroderma and system sclerosis are some other reasons for acid reflux condition.

Smoking increases the risk of acquiring the disease rather than intake of alcohol, tea and other beverages as stated a while back which can minimally contribute to the disease.Acid reflux condition becomes sever when you are a smoker. Chain smokers are very prone to getting the dreaded GERD. The symptoms of people who already developed GERD are getting worse with each passing day.

If your salt consumption is very high then you are at a very high risk of getting acid reflux condition, this has been proved by many researchers.

Symptoms can be noticed by the individual himself and enables the family physician to initiate the acid reflux treatment. There are number of ways on how to treat this disease. Some management includes drugs such as antacid, modification of diet, elevation of the head when lying down, or the last resort will be surgery. It is always better to prevent acid reflux than getting it treated at a later stage.
