The Reason Why Golf Balls have Dimples

Golf balls as you know have a lovely dimpled surface. The reason for this is all to do with aerodynamics and getting the ball to fly further. Without the dimples the big hitters would not be reaching anywhere near 300 yard drives.

The original golf ball design is of course lost in the mists of time. The first recorded effort was in the early 17th century when a mixture of feathers pressed into leather was invented. This feather ball was hand crafted and expensive, so like so much else in those times the peasants didn’t get a look in.

It was only in the early 20th century that science stepped forward and created the huge advance of a dimple surface for the golf ball. It turns out that the dimples have a positive aerodynamic effect. Put simply a smooth surface passing through the air leaves a pocket of low pressure behind it and this creates drag, slowing down the ball.

Dimples stop the air pressure dropping as much, which reduces the drag so the ball flies further. They also help you achieve backspin along with the great clubs available nowadays.

The dimpled golf ball is the universally approved and recognised design but the core of course can vary. Varying the materials in the core of the ball produces balls with a range of different characteristics suitable for all levels of player from beginner to tour pro.

A good nights sleep will prepare you for your next round of golf. A memory foam mattress queen or king sized is perfect for a comfortable nights sleep. During the day a memory foam chair helps keep a stiff back at bay. If you’re on a budget try a memory foam bed topper for great value and pressure relief.
